Thessaloniki can be directly reached by train, plane and bus.
Thessaloniki has an international airport that receives many domestic flights from Athens and direct flights from abroad. Located 15 km south east of the city centre, the airport of Thessaloniki is the busiest in Greece and serves travelers and residents in northern Greece.
The large port of Thessaloniki connects northern Greece to many popular Greek islands. Although there are no direct ferries to Piraeus, there are ferries to other places, like Crete, Rhodes and Skiathos.
Rent a Car
Thessaloniki is located about 500 km north of Athens. You take the National Highway from Athens to Lamia and then continue to Thessaloniki. The road is very good and it has recently been reconstructed. The whole trip takes about 5 hours.
Thessaloniki Bus station
There are frequent daily buses from Athens to Thessaloniki. They depart from Kifissou station (Kifossos street, 100) and arrive in the central suburban bus station in western Thessaloniki. The whole trip takes about 5 and a half hours and buses are modern and comfortable.
Thessaloniki Train Station
There are frequent daily trains from Athens to Thessaloniki. The trip with Intercity and Intercity Express should not take more than 4 hours. Reservations with these trains must be made in advance because tickets run out quickly. There is also a much lower train that takes about 6 and a half hours to go to Thessaloniki from Athens. Train leave from Larissis station in Athens and pass through Thiva, Levadia, Lianokladi and Larissa, before they reach Thessaloniki.
